A 4.9 litre, straight-6 engine mated to the 4 speed automatic delivers 178 bhp. You could variously find this car coachbuilt by Mulliner, Park Ward, Franaym, Graber, Hooper or James Young.

At auction in 2007, Christies in California sold a drophead version for $450,000.

This particular car I see often but on one occasion caught the owner parking up.
I asked if I could take some pictures and he was very obliging.

He then wandered off slowly. About ten minutes later back he came - very slowly as he's an elderly gent - with a small chap struggling behind him with a very large golf bag. Absolutely comical. The S1 has a large boot, but the poor sod was having a terrible time getting the club bag off his shoulder without the clubs falling out and nurturing it gently into the cavernous trunk.

Then the servant bowed and walked back to the house. Magic. I'd love to live like that!

The old boy guided the S1 down the street at approximately 7 mph, and all I could think was, 'Shouldn't 'Man Friday' have gone with him? How could he get the clubs out of the boot?'

Silly me. Chaps like this have guys waiting to do all the hard work at the club too, don't they...
