I've driven past this car so many times over the past few years. I mean hundreds of times. Always holding a space on Highgate Hill, this Mach 1 Mustang, I believe a Boss 351, certainly stands out with it's white paint and black graphics.

In the late 60's - 'Heroes & Villains' era of Beach Boys, before OPEC positioning oil as a 'weapon' and before the US Govt started to stockpile in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (read about it, fascinating, keeping oil in drilled-out salt caverns up to 1km below ground, basically silos...), this bad boy could only wheedle out a totally humungous 164 brake from a 4.3 litre V8!

To be truthful, I was secretly a little pleased I didn't have to venture near 'Horrids' today. Because when I'm there, I HAVE to take a picture of the endless array of exotica. But there's more to cars than the ultra high end. You can, in life, have too much of a good thing. Cast the net a little further and surprises do pop up that make it all the worthwhile.....

Ford Cortina MKII 3.0 V6 aka 'Savage'

136bhp good for 108mph. Lowered, lightened, stiffened. Minilite wheels, suspension amendments and an LSD were all part of the package.

These cars are not supercars. They were made, or at least the standard MKII was, in very large nuumbers. But this is the extreme, high-end version of the standard model, and, on top of that.......when was the last time you saw a MKII? Especially in this condition?

I've only ever seen two of these in London. 'Torch Red', is the colour, and with only a little over 19,000 sold worldwide, they weren't a pressingly popular edition to the Thunderbird line.
