I was trucking along at good pace in my trusty W124 Estate - 'The Red Menace' - in the left lane of two, towards the roundabout. From a break in traffic in the right lane, out of nowhere darted a black Fiat Punto. I must have been doing 30mph, as his left frontside stoved in behind the Merc's driver's door.

It gets confusing following what is released from Mercedes-Benz. So you've got the standard CLK. Before 2003, if you wanted more, a punchy V8 for instance, then you specced your W208 as a 55 AMG. Easy. A 5.4 litre naturally aspirated V8. Don't be caught up thinking it was the same engine as in the 2002-4 CL55 or in the last SL. No. That was the ML55 version. Supercharged, with twin intercoolers. Confused yet? Hold on.

When I was about 13, my mum's business started to do quite well. She became quite involved with key people in the music industry. I distinctly remember one long weekend, when in the morning I went along with my Dad to pick up some money from Zomba Records, Paula Yates left an unintelligable voice recording on the house phone for my mum, Idi Amin's crazy ex-wife (crazy, because she kept on banging on about heads in fridges, and kids being fed to crocodiles) came to tea, and my sister showed me the latest issue of 'Q' magazine, where my mum is interviewed saying the Stone Roses owed her a new dining table after playing Five Finger with a carving knife.
